Update Feb, 7th 2014: Please read the update at the end of this post.

Since Digsby is now open source (https://github.com/tagged/digsby) I was able to have a look at the code and fix the problem they had with missing GMail notifications.

See these two threads on the support forum:

GMail Notifications Gone?

Digsby no longer connecting to GMail

They have closed their forum so I am unable to post the fix there.

SOLUTION to fix Digsby

Below is the solution for whomever wants to have their Digsby working again with GMail:

1. Close and exit Digsby

2. Go the the Digsby installation folder the navigate to: lib/plugins/component_gmail

3. In this folder delete the file called gmail.pyo

4. From this website download this zip archive: gmail.pyo.zip. Unpack the file and you should have a new gmail.pyo to put it back where Digsby is installed in lib/plugins/component_gmail
(SHA1: 34c6789c1bd525853e83b4b0a437c429f75cf245)

5. Restart Digsby and Gmail notifications should be working again!

Use the comments sections or the contact page if you need further assistance with this.

Is this Safe?

This is a valid concern. Trusting code from “strangers” may not be a good idea…

If you are worried about password theft and what not, you can see here what changes I have done: Digsby Patch

Also, above there is the SHA1 hash of the ZIP with the patch. That is a sort of signature for the Archive. If your archive has has a different signature then it is NOT from me.

This fix is provided AS IS, no guarantees that it will work for everybody, so use it at your own risk. I’ve fixed it for me, and published the fix in case others enjoy Digsby as well.

Do You want to say Thanks?

Buy me a cup of tea πŸ™‚

PS: I just want to say that I am very touched by the people that have donated. I did not even think to post a donate button until someone actually asked for it in the comments…

Update on February 7th, 2014 – The GMail notifications stopped working a few days ago.

Looking in the log files it seems that Google changed how the inbox was being read. Their own old application (GMailNotifier) stopped working as well. What seems to have happened is that GMail has dropped their previous protocol (“ui=pb”) and that was what Digsby was using. The only fix is to rewrite the GMail plugin in digsby to use the new JavaScript interface. But that is too big an effort for me right now.

  1. PES says:

Yahoo is not working on digsby for days. Trilian is working. Can you make a fix for yahoo at least, please ?

  2. Steve says:

I’m locked out of my Gmail without this plugin.
Lost my password and digsby was the only way I could get in.
    Hope it returns.

  3. S. M. Shishir says:

It works for some days. But after some days it behaves like before. Mails can’t arrive.

  4. PokerMan says:

I did IMAP, and it checks the email, but when I click on it, Gmail stops at the login page, no automatic login.

Trillian makes it past the login page… Any ideas on how to use whatever script they use, or some other workaround?

  5. Selmisha says:

Looks like Twitter may have broke again. *sigh*

    • Jacked says:

Twitter too. Gmail and twitter are both having problems for me. Yahoo mail hasn’t worked for ages. Maybe its time to just go to trillian or something.

  6. K says:

Well, Google Apps accounts are broken now too, so I’m stuck with IMAP. It works, but it’s inferior in my opinion.

I’m not aware of any good alternatives for Windows and I’ve tried Trillian and Pidgin which I think are worse than the functionality that Digsby provides, even when I’m stuck using IMAP.

  7. Hey guys, I know everyone is searching for the Gmail fix we been coming to get for a long time. I just realized that Digsby supports POP and IMAP for mail.

    (for those who dont know)
It basically means you can log into your mailbox and receive notifications and mail from gmail. Not by the plugin but by directly logging into some kind of email backdoor if you will. Its a service almost all email providers offer.

This option has always been available just not needed for gmail since digsby had its own dedicated gmail option.
Here are the settings you’ll have to match to get your gmail working with IMAP or POP

Incoming Mail (IMAP) Server – Requires SSL
    Port: 993
    Requires SSL:Yes

Outgoing Mail (SMTP) Server – Requires TLS
    Port: 465 or 587
    Requires SSL: Yes
    Requires authentication: Yes

Use same settings as incoming mail server
Full Name or Display Name: [your name]
Account Name or User Name: your full Gmail address ()
Email address: your full Gmail address ()
    Password: your Gmail password

Hope it all works for you!

  8. K says:

I normally don’t post comments, but I’m making an exception here. It should be noted that email alerts are still working for Google Apps accounts. So, if you own your own domain and have Google handling your email, you’ll still be able to connect and get notifications.

It’s interesting that they still use the old protocol for Google Apps accounts. I’m thinking it has to do with not wanting to break compatibility with any applications that businesses or other institutions might be using who have moved their email over to Google.

Anyway, no one else has mentioned this and I thought it was worth putting in the word.

  9. Ilie P. says:

You can still get this to work (somewhat) if you create an IMAP account for your GMail account. It will then show the email notifications.

  10. Gonzalo says:

Thank you very much for your work. It was very useful for me the last few months.

  11. yoyo says:

Anyone have any good alternatives to digsby?

  12. unknown says:

I am unable to resolve my gmail connection issue this this solution.

    Can someone please assist further

  13. Ilie P. says:

Digsby may be permanently broken :(. See me the update at the end of my post.

    • Selmisha says:

Thank you for the update. I’ve been patching up Digsby for years and I’m so thankful for the work around you hooked us up with 8 months ago. You didn’t have to fix it back then or even look into it now, but I’m damn glad you did.

      Again, THANK YOU.

    • Gmail has stopped connecting for me through Digsby also – This is a shame – I have loved it’s features in allowing me to see all my gmail accounts

    • Hilary says:

Thank you for your update. We totally understand. Leave it to them to fix what wasn’t broken in the first place. πŸ˜‰

  14. Hilary says:

I think the plugin has stopped working. I checked your changes on the github site, and Google is still using accounts.google.com, so I’m not sure why it’s stopped working. If you have an update or at least can provide instructions, that would be awesome.

Thanks for all you’ve done. πŸ™‚

  15. Gonzalo says:

It also doesn’t work for me anymore… Any idea? Thanks.

  16. yoyo says:

Gmail notifications dont work again in digsby.

  17. ray says:

I used your solution and it worked for about 8 months. As of 2-5-2014, it stopped working and my digsby is back to not connecting. If you can find another solution I would sure appreciate it.

  18. gil says:

Hi, I don’t know if you can help me with my issue. Ever since our company implemented a websense policy I’m now bind to use the imap settings for both gmail and yahoomail. My issue is on the yahoo mail side using the IMAP settings. When connecting to yahoo mail with new email on it, it’s unable to connect unless I read them all through the browser(assuming all of the status are read) then that would be the time its able to connect properly. Thanks!

  19. CarrieAnn Baumgarten says:

This is awesome!! Not sure if you even work with/for Digsby, but they should compensate you! Thank you so much!!!!

  20. Zen says:

I was using the IMAP work-around for awhile, but just tried this- and huzzah! It works! Except, and I don’t know if this is how it’s always worked or what, but I have two gmail accounts, and when I tell it to take me to my inbox, it always takes me to the dominant account. Not a big deal, and it’s not going to bother me, but figured I ought to say something about it.

  21. James says:

works like a charm!! thank you so much!!

  22. Lee says:

Works brilliantly, thank you very much!

  23. Jason says:

Thank you sir, you are a gentleman and a scholar!

  24. Logos says:

Does anyone know how to fix the yahoo email authentication issue? Some of my yahoo accounts authenticate fine, some never connect

  25. acturbo says:

    it worked perfectly, thank you.

  26. L says:

Thanks for the gmail fix…so nice of you to post it.

  27. Matej Stulak says:

Great stuff, you helped me a big time. Donation completed. Good job really.

  28. Daniel Dumitru says:

Hi, thank you for the fix, it worked instantly.
Do you know of any fix for the Yahoo “Loading contact list” problem? i mean yahoo only works once every full moon and then i don’t know what i did to fix it.

  29. lee says:

Hi, Thanks for fixing the gm ail notification, can you see if the same thing can happen to hotmail & twitter connection? not so much on twitter but i’m using hotmail so pls…

    • Ilie P. says:

I don’t use hotmail or twitter so chances are really slim that I’ll be looking into this any time soon.

I know, it’s pretty selfish of me πŸ™‚

  30. Josha says:

It works great, real appreciate it man, good job!

  31. Razvan says:

I took a look at your file, and it has “C:\Program Files (x86)\Digsby\lib\plugins\component_gmail”
    addresses throughout.

I don’t have it installed there.. so what I’m wondering is .. how does this still work ))

The original had the correct path to the custom installation location.

    Anyway, thank you !

    • Ilie P. says:

Well, I am not really an expert on how this file was compiled, but you are seeing the path where I used to “debug” it. I may still be in some comments somewhere…

In other words, I have no idea, but it works πŸ™‚

  32. Kiki says:

It’s Working.. OMG.. Thank you so so much..
I use that for my work email.. lol I have been stuffering for 6 mths already.. Thanks so much..

  33. DoomRater says:

Just patched my Digsby install with this file and all is well. Many thanks!

  34. Lisa A. says:

Thank you it works perfectly and the instructions were flawless!

  35. Melody S says:

Hi- Maybe I’m not understanding the “unpacking” part? It’s a zip file, so I extracted the file. That’s not working, so I wondered if I was missing something? Thanks, I’m excited that there’s a fix!

    • Ilie P. says:

Please read the instructions carefully :). You need to replace a specific file in your digsby installation.

  36. Fantastic, works a dream. I’m just starting out with Digsby and was disappointed in this flaw until I found a link to here. Small donation incoming πŸ™‚

  37. Mois says:

Oh, my. The SHA1 is *for the ZIP file*, not for the unzipped one. Sorry. πŸ™‚

  38. Mois says:

Just downloaded the zip, unzipped, and my gmail.pyo file has this SHA1=

    instead of

    What happened?

    • Ilie P. says:

The hash is for the ZIP file and NOT for the .pyo file. So you need to hash the ZIP you have downloaded, before you unpack it πŸ™‚

  39. Arul says:

    Hi ,

I am not able to connect my MS-Outlook account (POP3), i have entered the POP server and SMTP correctly, but it shows as (Connecting…) and then it shows as (Failed to Connect )..
It would be help full , if any suggestion/solutions.

    thanks in advance.

    • Ilie P. says:

I would make sure there is no firewall blocking the connection on your end.

If it’s safe for your where you are, try disabling the firewall for one minute, but after testing remember to put it back on!

      • Arul says:

        Hi Ilie,

Thanks for the suggestion, but i did try to turn off my firewall and tried to connect, but did not succeed, may be any more suggestions will be appreciated!! πŸ™‚

        • Ilie P. says:

If you are absolutely sure you have entered the POP3 and SMTP configurations correctly (including port numbers and proper configuration of SSL or TSL) then indeed it may be a problem with Digsby. If that is the case, have a look at the old forums, you may find something useful…

  40. Sos says:

Thank you! Mine stopped working months ago and nothing existed at the time to fix it.

  41. Ben says:

BRILLIANT! Been trying to figure out why this wasn’t working for quite a while before I stumbled on this. THANK YOU!

  42. King says:

how come widget connections fails? when i try to use my digsby embeded widget on my site, it shows connection failed

    • Ilie P. says:

It is my understanding that the Widget used to connect to some servers that were managed by the former Digsby team. Since Digsby was bought by Tagged, those servers have been closed down (or they simply stopped working at some point in time).

So I don’t have any hopes that the Widget will every by working again, unless it is completely rewritten to use a backend (server) that you can install on your hosting and so you will no longer require the old Digsby servers.

  43. kevin says:

    Thanks for the fix!

  44. pnorbert says:

    Thanks mate…

  45. Mirza says:

You’re a hero for creating this fix. I hope you know how appreciated it is. Many thanks.

  46. Jeff says:

    worked perfectly – thanks.
“never know what you’ve got till it’s gone”

  47. Scott in Sac says:

Thank you so much for this fix. I was thinking with good people like you wouldn’t it be wonderful if there was a centralized web site dedicated for keeping Digsby up to date. Just a thought. That way people from all around the world could simply go to the site for update mods.
    At any rate thank you!

  48. Joris says:

Works as a charm (also the Twitter fix)! Great work and thanks for sharing!

  49. gary says:

Do you think you will work on the recent twitter failed to connect error (new api) as well as yahoo email (they updated their site a few days ago and now digsby gets an authentication error).

Thanks for the gmail fix! Will donate some tea when I get some dough (money).

    • Ilie P. says:

At this time I am pretty busy with something else, and I also don’t use tweeter as much. But I will have look as soon as my schedule allows. Perhaps is a simple patch.

      • gary says:

        • Becky says:

I’ll second that, if you get an opportunity to look, I’m sure there would be more than a few appreciators. Thanks

          • gary says:

I did a work-around to fix the Yahoo Mail error. I deleted the Yahoo Mail account in digsby, and set it up as an imap account.

            Incoming: imap.mail.yahoo.com 993 with SSL
            Outgoing: smtp.mail.yahoo.com 465 with SSL

Username is your full Yahoo email address: ie,

          • gary says:

Nevermind. The Imap account does not work. Back to square one.

        • gary says:

Sorry for spamming this post, but I have found the solution to the Yahoo mail error. Turn off SSL in Yahoo mail. When you are at your inbox, click on the “gear” at the top right of the screen, and select “Mail Options.” Scroll down to the bottom and uncheck “Turn on SSL.” Click on the save button, and you’re done.

    • mohammad says:

i found the solution for digsby twitter failed to connect issue, since twitter stopped using REST API v1 and migrated to v1.1 all you need to do is edit the file twitter.js in folder Digsby\lib\plugins\twitter\res and update the paramter apiRoot (mostly in line 208) from the old value ‘https://api.twitter.com/1/’ to ‘https://api.twitter.com/1.1/’ and start digsby and enjoy twitter again πŸ™‚

      • Bluedrop says:

This fix does not work for me :((

        Thanks for the effort though!

        • mohammad says:

did you find the line of apiRoot? still the same error?

          • gary says:

Awesome! This works for me. Thanks mohammad!

          • Bluedrop says:

Yes I did. I actually redid the process a couple of times. Don’t know what I’m doing wrong.

Thanks a lot anyways πŸ™‚ And I’m glad it works for so many people πŸ˜€ πŸ˜€

          • Bluedrop says:

Never mind, it was bad on my part, for some reason I had Digsby in both x64 and x86 and I was modifying the wrong one πŸ˜€

Now it works for feed, but not for operation (RT, d, @) – still, it solved almost all I need. Thanks!

      • Chris says:

worked perfectly my friend. thanks a million.

      • Travis says:

Was this updated again? I just tried your fix and it’s not working.

        • Ilie P. says:

It’s still working for me and others report that it still works for them. So I recommend you try again following the steps I’ve detailed in the post.

        • Brian says:

No it is not working anymore. Tried on multiple computers. Unless there are references other than line 208, this is not working anymore.

Holy crap, I’d been checking Digsby and also sent a bug request to the support team. I just checked the forum again and someone had posted the link to this blog. THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!!! I know Digsby is essentially “bloatware” but I prefer it to Trillian and other IM aggregators.

It works now, it works!!! Thank you so much for taking the time to fix this. I submitted a bug report to Digsby awhile ago and NOTHING. I may as well have submitted the bug report to my mom. At least I would have gotten a sympathetic dinner out of it. πŸ™‚ You rule.

  67. Adrian says:

I know it is kinda off topic, but since few days Digsby widget integrated in my website stopped working, showing the “connection failed” message.

It used to work well for ages, no changes were done to the website.
Since the Digsby forum doesn’t allow any new registration, is the only place i can cry out πŸ™‚

    So, any suggestion / help?

    • Ilie P. says:

Sorry, but I have no experience with that Widget, or how it is supposed to work. Connection failed may indicate a network problem as well. Check from another computer/network and see if that helps.

  68. Tank says:

Thank YOU!!!!! I rely on Digsby mainly for the email notifs and was dreading looking for a new client to do this.

I would love to buy you a cup of tea one day! Mark my words.

  74. RossN says:

As one of the original people who posted to github about the issue, I just want to say a hearty thanks, this is totally working and awesome.
I was able to uninstall trillian as well πŸ˜€

Thanks for all your hard work, open source doesnt work without someone writing some code.

  81. Rajakumar says:

Thanks for the fix. Was trying out trillian after the issue and wasn’t satisfied at all. Now back to using digsby. It would be great if you can fix the hotmail/outlook issue too.
